But his performances at Reims – on loan from Arsenal for the 2022-23 season – have earned him that. A £35m transfer to Monaco – U.S. officials were circling.
At a time when the road map to a British eldership seemed too complicated, he had strong public support for the United States.
When the England under-21s left the camp, a secret arrangement to meet US soccer officials was instead posted all over social media, with NBA tickets and a trip to Florida.
He was reportedly invited to the New York Yankees to watch him train, and several of the United States’ top international players were sent to take him to dinner to convince him to make the switch.
“I’ve said that the fans have given me a lot of motivation and have shown me a lot of support throughout the whole cycle and the whole journey to this point,” Balegan said on Friday.
“The most important thing for me is to always be able to get that back. I want to continue to show my fans that I made the right decision.”
As much as Team USA wants to keep politics off the field and focus on their game, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Balogan joining the team is impossible at the behest of President Trump.
If the Trump administration wins the Supreme Court case, it will create uncertainty not only for Balogu, but for many, says Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University and chair of constitutional studies at the Cato Institute.
The administration says it won’t move to roll back birthrights, but the logic of its argument — that those people aren’t actually citizens — hangs over them.
“Trump’s promises and assurances are often not worth it, but even if he sticks to that decision, the future administration probably won’t be,” Somin said.
Still, Somin believes the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, will not rule against President Trump. They gave their doubts during the oral argument in April.

It may be a coincidence that the World Cup, the Supreme Court’s birthright decision and the country’s 250th anniversary are happening at the same time. But amid global turmoil and domestic division over a variety of polarizing issues, the show’s interplay is holding up a mirror of the American public.
A majority of Americans believe that babies born in the country should be automatically granted citizenship, according to a Reuters poll from April.
But there is a divide along party lines. According to the poll, only 9% of Democrats agree with ending birthright citizenship, compared to 62% of Republicans.
Baloghi isn’t the only player on Team USA with a mixed identity.
