Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps doesn’t know if she’s ready for the spotlight again after signing for the London City Lionesses.

Asked if he was prepared to face scrutiny back in England, Earps told BBC Sport: “I don’t know. You know, I think the game can be noisy and it’s hard to deal with sometimes. It comes a bit with the territory and how social media has grown.
“But I guess it’s one of those things. I believe you have to take the good with the bad. We’ve been working really hard to build the game on social for so many years. It’s hard sometimes.
“I don’t know what the honest answer to that question is but it’s also a great compliment to where the game is. You’ve got to take the rough smooth sometimes.”
Arps has joined an ambitious City of London since American businessman Michelle Kang took over in December 2023.
His investment transformed the club, who finished sixth in their first WSL season after promotion in 2025.
“She’s a strong woman in business and someone who’s got a passion for business, I’m very inspired by business women,” said Earps.
“We had a (video) conversation. With all the initiatives he’s been doing and all the initiative, I was impressed that he could spare any time for me.
“Her energy is really infectious and I think you’ve seen that over the years, her investment (in women’s sport) has been consistent. It’s clear she has a real passion and energy for women’s sport as a whole. We’ve had really great conversations and I’m really excited to be involved at the club.”
Earps helped England win Euro 2022 and reach the 2023 World Cup final, where they were previously beaten by Spain. Retired from international football After earning 53 caps last year.
After signing a two-year contract with London City, he added: “I’m not ready for the real world yet. I’m ready to make the most of everything that comes my way.
“I’m at a different stage in my career. I don’t want to say old, but let’s say experienced, a little wiser, who I am as a person and what’s important to me.
“This club and this project feels special to be a part of in terms of what they are trying to do in women’s football and women’s sport.
“I think our values and personalities kind of align in what we want to do. I’m hoping that it’s going to be really fun every day.
“But yeah, (I’m) probably the same old Mary with maybe a little more knowledge, personality, passion, energy, just trying to work harder to be the best player and person that I can cross the white line every day and every time.”
