Aat the end of July, Durutti Column will release their first album in 16 years: the stunningly beautiful Renascent. It’s a good time for Vini Reilly, Bruce Mitchell and Keir Stewart to return as Durutti’s influence is everywhere: sample Blood Orange on his new album Essex Honey; featured by Harry Styles on the LP Kiss Always. Disco, Sometimes, also Mark William Lewis and Yung Lean; played at The Bear.

Not that the group needs recognition: since 1978, they have been one of the most popular acts in the UK, their dreamy instruments offering a sunny approach to post-punk rock, as last year’s re-release, The Return of the Durutti Column reminded us. The record’s deviation from the trends of the time, wrote Alexis Petridis in a five-star review, “ultimately worked in its favor: apart from the sound of old music, there is nothing to tie this song to a certain time, which means that it never happened.”

You can ask Reilly about being the first to be signed to Factory Records, having that debut album produced against his will by producer Martin Hannett, working with Morrissey, learning to play guitar again after a stroke, and how this new album came about. “I have a good reason to stop now because I have arthritis,” they told us in 2023 – yet here we are, with as beautiful a record as he ever made.
