Bob Olinger retires with victory in the Champion Steers Hurdle on day three of the Punchestown Festival.
Ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe, the Henry de Bromhead-trained 11-year-old (4-1) beat Willie Mullins’ Jimmy du Ceuil (9-1) and pre-race favorite Tihupu (5-4) who was seeking a third straight win in the race.
It capped a remarkable 11-win career that produced three at Cheltenham, as he returned to take the years on a high.
Teehupu led going down the final stretch of the three-mile circuit, but Bob Olinger closed the gap by the final fence and had more in the tank to open up a gap.
Jimmy Du Ceuil applied late pressure but it wasn’t enough with Bob Olinga three-quarters of a length away.
The Novice Chase went the way of Salvator Mundi (13-2) who took advantage of the fall of favorite Copeque des Bordes.
With Mullins’ newly retained jockey Harry Cobden aboard, it was up to his stablemate’s misfortune to claim victory from home.
Kopec des Bordes looked to be in complete control with Salvator Mundi, who was on his coattails, before the fall, racing to a 12-length victory from second-placed Irish Panther (15-2) and third-placed Jacobs Ladder (18-1).
