The United States military has killed at least three people after it intercepted a drug-trafficking ship in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

According to Washington, the attack targeted a ship carrying unknown drugs from Latin America to the US.

The US Southern Command said in a statement on its website that it had “conducted a serious attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist organization”.

“Intelligence confirmed that the ship was plying the notorious narco routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in human smuggling. Three native terrorists were killed in the process,” he said.

An unidentified video attached to the statement appeared to show the moment a speedboat was hit by a missile and burst into flames.

About 211 people have now been killed in such a strike in the Pacific.

US President Donald Trump has said that the country is in an “armed conflict” with drug cartels in Latin America, and that his government wants to stop the spread of drugs.

However, its administration has not provided concrete evidence linking all those killed to drug trafficking, with some accusing the US of killing local fishermen without any links to the cartels.

Critics have questioned the legitimacy of the protests, including US politicians and human rights groups.

On Thursday, US lawmakers demanded that the Pentagon release “unedited” footage of the boat strike.

The first attack in September drew attention from US lawmakers after the military confirmed it had used a “double-knock” strategy that killed two people who survived the initial attack. 11 people were killed in the strike.

The Trump administration has insisted that what followed was “self-defense,” but critics say it is illegal to kill survivors.
