Tehran has abandoned talks to end the war because of Israel’s attack on southern Lebanon.

Talks planned in Switzerland between the United States and Iran to discuss the technical aspects of their ceasefire agreement have been suspended.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that the talks, which were due to take place in Burgenstock, would not go ahead.

Reports indicate that Iran has delayed sending its delegation to discuss technical issues related to the ceasefire agreement – digitally signed and the two countries on Wednesday – because of Israel’s ongoing war in Lebanon.

The attack on Israel At least 16 people were reportedly killed overnight and Friday in southern Lebanon, with the Iran-allied Hezbollah group reporting a fierce battle.

A ceremony followed by talks is expected to take place at the Burgenstock Resort in Stansstad, near Lucerne in central Switzerland.

It is owned by Katara Hospitality, part of Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, which has helped advocate for peace in the conflict.

On Friday, in a message to the AFP news agency, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said: “The planned talks between the US, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan have been suspended.

“Switzerland is still ready to lead these discussions. The preparation work relevant to Burgenstock continues,” it added, without giving a new date for them.

The announcement followed a report from Al Mayadeen that Iran was delaying sending its envoy to Switzerland because of Israel’s ongoing war in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that the Israeli army would remain in a “security zone” in southern Lebanon as long as “Israel’s security needs require it”.

Israel and Hezbollah are not part of the deal, but Iran has insisted that Israel must withdraw from a large part of southern Lebanon it occupies.

Logistics has never been ‘easy or predictable’

The US push for urgent talks with Iran hit a snag just two days after the 14-point deal was signed. memorandum of understandingwhich sets the agenda for a 60-day consultation period.

Vice President JD Vance was ready to fly overnight to meet his Iranian counterparts at a mountainside resort in the small Swiss village of Obburgen.

His staff and a small group of reporters gathered at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington in anticipation of the visit.

Meanwhile, many White House officials, front-line staff and a large number of journalists gathered in Switzerland to prepare for Vance’s arrival.

But then, suddenly on Thursday evening, the trip was called off.

The White House issued a statement explaining that Vance – who was appointed by President Donald Trump to lead the talks – and his delegation prepared for the talks, but could not complete his plans and the deputy will remain in Washington.

“These negotiations have never been easier or more predictable,” he said.

Also on Thursday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif canceled his trip to Switzerland, his spokesman told AFP.
