morocco A country, a team so mentioned by Scotland fans that they only played once.
Why? Until last Saturday, the last match we played in the World Cup was 10,200 days ago against Morocco.
If you told someone that night in Saint-Etienne that they would have to wait 28 years to play in another World Cup, where, ironically, Morocco will be waiting for you in MD2, you wouldn’t have believed it.
Incidentally, a 3-0 defeat to France marked the starting point of France’s 98 Origin, Odyssey football tournament.
The game will also get the mention it has deserved over the years, as it was our last memory of a final until we qualified for Euro 2020 – then it was our last World Cup game until beating Haiti this week.
Do fans remember that game? The scoreline? Was Craig Burley actually fired? Was she sporting the dreaded bleached blonde hairstyle?
Those who were in the stadium, or those who watched on TV, even those who were not born, were aware of the Morocco game because Scotland played the last game in the World Cup.
Now Scotland stand on the brink of more history against Morocco. A win for Steve Clarke’s side and Scotland would see them qualify from a group stage at a major tournament for the first time in their history.
We’ll keep talking about Morocco and the World Cup – but this time for the right reasons.
It sounds simple but in the end, this game will be very difficult in practice. The team that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar three and a half years ago, was ranked seventh in the world and boasted a squad full of talent.
Their captain won the Champions League title for PSG. Achraf Hakimi highlights the talent in their squad and Clarke has no doubt Scotland are up against it.
He is about to take charge of his 80th Scotland game. He will need to produce a performance to match the win against Spain at Hampden Park in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
It was Spain’s only loss in the entire tournament from the qualifiers to the final.
Scotland is able. Many had written their name on Wembley for Euro 2020, but they drew 0-0 with England and could have won the game. This squad will have to find something against the dark horses for the World Cup if they want to make history.
A draw would put Scotland in a strong position to qualify. Defeat and we start to wonder what it takes to qualify as the third-placed team, although we have another chance against Brazil in Miami.
The Tartan Army captures Boston. They turned Fenway Park into Hampden Park by beating Haiti. Support is something Clark is keen to highlight.
Scotland head coach Donnie Strathy also wanted to pay tribute, a passionate fan who sadly died in the city while following his country. Fans will participate in a minute’s applause at Boston Stadium in the 76th minute.
It puts football, life and the World Cup into perspective.
