The London Marathon in 2027 will be a special one-off event held over two days

The London Marathon will be held over two days in a special one-off edition in 2027.

Organizers It was confirmed earlier this year After 1.33 million people registered to vote in next year’s election, they were looking for ways to get more people to participate.

The two events – Saturday, 24 and Sunday, 25 April – will allow 100,000 people to take part in the 2027 London Marathon.

London Marathon Events (LME) chief executive Hugh Brasher said the move was expected to raise more than £150m for charities and £400m for the UK economy.

All those who applied to participate next year will vote on both Saturday and Sunday, the results of the election will be announced at the beginning of July.

“The 2027 London Marathon double is our biggest evolution to date – a once-in-a-generation marathon and a reimagining of what a city-wide celebration of movement can be,” said Brasher.

“By expanding to 100,000 runners over two days, we’ve opened the door for more people, charities and more communities to take part in the world’s biggest marathon. We believe it will raise over £150m for good causes and deliver £400m of social and economic benefit to the UK economy.”

“Thank you to the vision and support of the Mayor of London, the councils on the road, the emergency services and all relevant stakeholders who have given their support to make this world first event possible for London and the UK.”

City of London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “London is the sporting capital of the world and I am delighted that for one year only in 2027, the world famous London Marathon will be held over two days.

“The London Marathon showcases the best of our city and we will continue to work closely with the London Marathon events and our partners to take the necessary steps towards building a better and more prosperous London for everyone over the weekend.”

1,338,544 people applied for the 2027 London Marathon, breaking the record of 1,133,813 applicants for 2026.

London Marathon With 59,830 runners in 2026, it is the world’s largest one-day fundraising event, with over £90 million raised for charity by 2026 participants.

History was also made at this year’s event as Kenyan Sebastian Sawe became the first athlete to run in the race. A marathon that takes less than two hours.

Brasher was adamant that the expanded two-day event would be for one year only, following what he described as an “incredible turnout of applicants” hoping to attend in 2027.

He told BBC Sport that the two-day event has been in the works for nine years, but after the original idea was formed in 2017, planning to hold it in 2020, they could not get permission.

The plan is for elite women, elite female athletes, champions and ‘age-fit’ women to lead the mass event on one day, with elite men, elite male para-athletes, champions and ‘age-fit’ men to lead the mass event on the other.

However, organizers of the London Marathon said all the format details would be confirmed in the coming months.

Over the two days, all 100,000 participants will run from Greenwich to Westminster in the traditional London Marathon.

Brasher told the BBC that the first draw would take place on the day of the marathon – the day of the marathon – before the second draw for Saturday.

The Mini London Marathon will take place on Friday and will attract over 20,000 young participants.

Organizers said all additional proceeds from the two-day format will be distributed by the London Marathon Foundation to projects that promote movement for children and young people in London and England.
