I’m also in the game for Radio 5 Live and let’s just say I’ll be keeping a close eye on Cristiano Ronaldo.
Portugal is an interesting team. I covered them in their draw against DR Congo and they have the best midfielder in the tournament, but they also have Ronaldo up front.
That was a huge positive, but now it’s a problem.
You used to put Ronaldo up with the world’s best when he was at his peak, but he’s not the same player now.
He struck Portugal against DR Congo and it was like they were playing with a man down.
What I saw was that Portugal boss Roberto Martinez must have seen – everyone else did – but not removed him.
Ronaldo was world class and once one of the game’s best goalscorers, but he can no longer run or even move.
I want to make it clear that I’m not criticizing the player Ronaldo was, not at all, but I also think he shouldn’t be playing for Portugal anymore.
I don’t see Martinez dropping Ronaldo for this game though. His influence is great.
I still think Portugal will beat Uzbekistan, who were very open against Colombia, because they have superior footballers – but if they win, it will be because of Ronaldo, not him.
