In a statement released on June 8, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Stokes and Atkinson were under investigation for violating the curfew.
There were fears that Stokes would retire after this, which would end much of England’s career. His fears were put to rest when he returned to training against Durham last weekend.
And, as part of the investigation, both Stokes and Atkinson spoke this week, with the ECB hoping for a quick resolution.
Speaking to the media, neither director of cricket Rob Kay nor head coach Brendon McCullum backed Stokes’ future captaincy, adding to speculation that his four-year tenure could come to an end.
Joe Root is being named captain for the second Test against New Zealand, and says he will take the role on a “game-by-game” basis.
Throughout the investigation, the ECB has denied asking stocks to release.
And now the prospect of a return as England captain at Trent Bridge is growing.
A return to Nottingham represents full circle time for Stokes.
In 2018, Stokes was acquitted of the charges Following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub. After being found guilty, Stokes played the next Test at Trent Bridge.
