In mysterious circumstances still surrounded by many questions, the Mexican military shot down a drone that flew near South Korea’s training camp in the city of Guadalajara as the team prepared to face Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.
According to the networkSky News Arabia. Mexican forces used special techniques to locate the “unregistered” plane and then quickly neutralized it, a Mexican federal official confirmed.
The identity of the party that launched the plane has not yet been revealed, and it also carried out a mission to spy on the tactical plans of the Korean national team.
Commenting on the incident, the coach of the South Korean national team, Hong Myeon Bo said. “During our training, a drone appeared in the sky.”
He continued. “Luckily it was before we started working on our tactical plans so it didn’t affect us, but the timing of the match was very sensitive and what happened is really unfortunate.”
Mexican officials have not yet clarified the exact time of the incident, nor whether any suspects have been arrested.
A federal source said authorities have neutralized several drones in recent days that tried to approach security areas around stadiums in the three host cities, Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
The incident comes as part of the massive “Kukulkan” program launched by Mexican authorities last March, involving some 100,000 security and military personnel. The program includes strict security measures and early warning systems to protect teams, stadiums and fans.
As for Canada, authorities have imposed a complete ban on unauthorized drones flying over stadiums and training facilities in Vancouver and Toronto, and that ban continues until July 7.
