World Cup 2026: Harry Kane England ‘have got a great striker’, says Gary Lineker

England will face Ghana in their second group game on 23 June at 21:00 BST.

Bayern Munich’s Kane gave England the lead with a converted penalty in the first half and restored his team’s lead with a header three minutes before the break.

“I’m delighted that Ken has equaled my record,” continued Lineker. “His all-around game is what sets him apart for me.”

Kane’s performance in Argentina followed Lionel Messi’s hat-trick against Algeria, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for France with two goals in the win over Senegal and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scored twice in Norway’s win over Iran.

Lineker manager Alan Shearer, who scored 30 goals for England, including two at the 1998 World Cup, said: “Harry Kane has seen Messi, Mbappe and Haaland all come on and score goals.

“It’s only a matter of time before you break your record.”

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who has been left out of England boss Thomas Tuchel’s squad this summer, says Kane is not only the Three Lions’ best player, but “one of the best players in the world”.

He added: “You can’t say enough about him. On the field, he’s incredible, but off the field, he’s a great leader.”
