Before facing Germany… the Ivorian Federation finally reacts
Cote d’Ivoire got off to a perfect start to the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, but their start has been marred by a problem involving player Elie Wahi, prompting the Ivorian federation to respond with an official statement.
This issue has nothing to do with the Ecuador match, but rather a sports betting issue This was reported yesterday, Wednesday, by the prestigious British newspaper “The Athletic”.
The newspaper clarified that the player, who was playing for “Nice” at that time, was arrested by the French police on May 29 on suspicion of intentionally receiving a yellow card during the May 17 goalless draw between Nice and Metz.
For its part, the Ivory Coast Football Federation issued an official press release today, Thursday, to clarify the situation.
The statement says: “The Ivorian Football Federation would like to provide more details regarding Ily Vahi. The federation has investigated various articles and information published on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, relating to the Ivorian international player Ilye Wahi.
“Until now, the Federation has not been officially notified of any legal or administrative action regarding this. During this sensitive period, the federation gives its full support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him. Elie Wahi remains an important member of the Ivory Coast team.”
“The Ivorian Football Federation also informs the player that he will not be able to join the delegation to Canada as the necessary administrative permits for his entry into Canadian territory have not been obtained at this stage.”
“Therefore, Eli Wahi will remain in the United States of America until the team’s return. The Ivory Coast Football Federation will continue to monitor the situation closely and will announce any useful official information.”
Vahy started for Cote d’Ivoire against Ecuador and now prepares for his country’s second-round group stage clash with Germany next Saturday night.
