World Cup 2026: Scotland’s Ryan Christie chases more dreams on same stage as idol Lionel Messi

Christie has just signed a new contract with Bournemouth and will stay at the club until 2029. As they say, he is in a good place. Messi’s performance at the age of 38 – he turns 39 this month – offers Christie a world of encouragement that this World Cup does not have to be his last.

In England, he sees players getting better with age, guys in their mid-30s who are still doing well at the top level. “Some are pushing into the high-30s and still churning out incredible performances week in, week out,” he said.

Head coach Clark has often talked about the importance of dynamic starters and finishers, impact players coming off the bench late. That’s the scenario Christie found himself in against Haiti. Exciting moment, those.

Will he be a starter or a finisher? “I honestly don’t mind,” he commented. “I’m not too sure to be honest. The manager is very, very big about it, especially when we come into camp.

“He’s making everyone realize that we’re going to need every single person in our squad at some point, some guys play three, four, five minutes, some guys play every minute, but everyone has a huge part to play. Everyone’s accepting it and doing their job so far.”

So off to Boston on Friday for Morocco. A point and Scotland’s place in the knockouts is more or less assured. A great 90-minute performance, however challenging, and they are history makers.

“It’s a dream come true to even play in a World Cup, but you have to quickly adjust your goals and adjust your mindset,” added Christie. “To be happy here you want to go and create more and keep pushing the bar. The manager has put his foot on the floor.”

Having fulfilled one dream in America, Christie is now chasing another. Morocco awaits – the biggest test of his football career.
