Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams audiobook review – the inside story that Meta tried to stop | Books

SArah Wynn-Williams’ memoir covering her seven years in the profession Facebook opens, unexpectedly, with a shark attack. The New Zealand boy was 13 years old and was swimming in the sea when the shark bit his nose and jerked it around. He lived to tell the tale, but his near-death experience awakened a desire to leave this world more than he found it.

Wynn-Williams worked for Facebook’s public department in 2011, after seeing the platform’s potential as a global meeting place. But what they found were high-quality workers and not tainted by ethical concerns such as privacy or the spread of hate speech and falsehoods. Both were averse to political interference and committed to rapid expansion, no matter the consequences, he says Trim he has said something out of date and false. The author also experienced a work culture where employees enjoyed things but had to be available 24/7 – which led to her having to answer emails while at work.

Bookwhich last year won a British audio award for non-fiction, it is narrated by Wynn-Williams, who combines dark humor and wonder with the outlandish situations in which he finds himself. There is also an introduction written and read by The Power author Naomi Alderman, who reveals how Meta, the company behind Facebook, Wynn-Williams spoke using a collective bargaining agreement to prevent him from advertising the book for publication. Alderman adds, mockingly, that “there are people in the country . . .”
