Queiroz writes his name in a rare number in the history of the World Cup

The Portuguese coach is participating for the 5th time in a row

Veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz added a new chapter to his rich career by making a record-equaling fifth consecutive World Cup appearance.

Queiroz, 73, will lead Ghana’s national team in their 2026 World Cup opener against Panama in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Queiroz continues an exceptional journey that began more than a decade and a half ago when he captained Portugal’s national team in 2010, before making three consecutive appearances for Iran’s national team in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Taking part in the first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Queiroz equaled the historic achievement of the famous Serbian coach Bora Milutinovic, who led 5 different teams in 5 consecutive matches of the World Cup between 1986 and 2002.

Despite equaling Bora Milutinovic’s record, Queiroz is just one step away from the all-time record for most World Cup appearances for managers.

This number is worn by the Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Pereira, who participated in 6 different draws of the World Cup.

Queiroz’s name was not among the contenders for the 2026 World Cup just a few months ago, after he dropped out of the starting line-up following his latest experience with Oman.

But the Ghanaian federation decided to give him another chance last April after former coach Otto Addo was sacked due to unconvincing results in friendlies, reviving the Portuguese coach’s career on the world’s biggest football stage.
