Before the battle with Germany, the Ivory Coast star was investigated for corruption


French authorities and the Professional Football League said on Wednesday that Ivory Coast striker Elie Wahy is under investigation for suspected sports corruption.

The investigation began after an unusual betting pattern was observed on a yellow card by a Nice player during a match in France’s First Division last month, the agency said. Reuters.

A spokesman for Marseille’s public prosecutor’s office told Reuters the 23-year-old French league player was detained on May 29 as part of an investigation into suspected fraud, sports corruption and money laundering.

The professional league, for its part, explained that it notified the authorities after its betting monitoring partners observed an unusual volume of international bets on Wahi, who was yellow carded during Nice’s match against Metz in the last round of the French league on May 17.

The professional league added that it had not initiated disciplinary proceedings and would not comment further.

For its part, The Athletic newspaper reported on Wednesday that Wahi was arrested by French police on May 29 ahead of the start of Ivory Coast’s 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, a game in which the Nice player took part.
