Under the Taliban regime, one woman struggles to negotiate with the men who reduce the lives of Afghan women.
Under the Taliban regime, Afghan women are constantly in danger, their rights are denied and their voices are suppressed. In the midst of this, silent resistance continues: Women find ways to learn, teach and organize in secret, keeping alive the knowledge and skills that the Taliban government wants to wipe out. The story explores the moral and psychological challenges of this war, highlighting the courage required to protect, survive and fight for freedom.
At its center is Mahbouba Seraj, a fearless advocate who believes that even those who want to oppress women must face them in dialogue. Although she draws international attention to the plight of Afghan women, her willingness to join the Taliban has drawn controversy from some activists.
Having exhausted every option, they turn to “nanawati”, a final appeal to the people of the other side, to ask the Taliban to restore the education and rights of girls and women. Through her story, the story explores the difficult, often controversial decisions involved in pursuing positive transparency and grassroots empowerment, showing how one woman’s approach to dialogue and resistance can help bring hope to the most difficult of situations.
