Jesús Carmona: Review of UnYdos – flamenco presented with growth and fire | Flamenco

TThere are many places in life where self-satisfaction, or acting like it, is not the norm. Watching a flamenco show is none of that. Peacocking is essential to flamenco a flamenco dancerand there is something wonderful about seeing the magnetic ability of a performer to control their instrument – and their audience.

Jesús Carmona opens his show, also for the 21st year Flamenco The festival, appearing in a line of light around the black stage, slowly stretches out the graceful arm of the snake and then suddenly snatches the sky. He is able to play hard and attack, suddenly explode or accept, change the energy around him, which shows Carmona as a great dancer. He’ll unleash wild legs, his legs fly and swing like the best La Liga player, but he’s got a solid frame (and some really solid spins to go with it).

The two-week festival includes many forms of modern flamenco, from the traditional to the final. Carmona, a former dancer and Eva Yerbabuenait falls at the extreme end of the spectrum, even with the modern look and feel. UnYdos has no actors, no audition, only two dancers (Carmona and Lucía Campillo) and four musicians: a guitarist and three musicians/palm trees (hands). It’s a stripped-down companionship, a musical lesson – even the guitar is often played with sarcasm – and Carmona uses every color on her feet.

Award-winning singer Jesús Corbacho is the standout, his flexible, flexible voice circling long chords with a melodious tone. Campillo dances with traditional instruments, the only one who looks good with a shawl, first holding tightly to her body, then her heavy fabric is waved in large circles. They change to a bata de cola wearing it with its long train – a very heavy fabric to use while looking beautiful (the weight of femininity, eh?). UnYdos is not a big change in style – there are only whispers of trying, and of course, the red brown of the avant garde of the last dress – but by appearing with a beautiful look, Carmona shows real talent.
