Argentina captain Lionel Messi has set a new legendary record by becoming the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, shared with Germany’s Miroslav Klose.

It’s Messi’s first hat-trick of his World Cup career, taking his tally to 16, equaling the retired Klose and just one goal shy of Al-Barghout’s tally, according to Opta.

Messi also scored his first hat-trick of 2026, topping the tournament’s top scorers list early on.
Thanks to this hat trick, Messi overtook Kylian Mbappe, Gerd Müller (14 goals), Ronaldo (15 goals).
According to Opta, Messi also became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in World Cup history at 38 years and 357 days, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo, who did the same at 33 years and 130 days.
