I recently started it A few friends the power of a large robot vacuum. One of my friends called him a family savior, while the other was both happy and frustrated with the number of vacuum AI drops he found under him. What is a Robot Vacuum?

A robot vacuum is an automatic vacuum, usually in the form of a rotating disk, that moves around your home to vacuum (and mop, as most brands today include vacuuming) for you. You may have heard others refer to these devices as “Roomba,” which is the brand that made the concept popular, but today almost every brand of vacuum cleaner – from the high-end Dyson to the inexpensive Bissell – makes some kind of robot vacuum. They come with a dock or a larger lift that can be detached.

Can You Use Robot Vacuums On All Types Of Floors?

You can, especially since there are so many types of mopping now that you can thoroughly clean the floor. You can use these tools on everything from hardwood to LVP and tile, although I wouldn’t recommend leaving the small cords for these stand-alone tools. Big, sturdy rugs are great, but bath and kitchen rugs or thin, easy-to-move rugs should be removed and put in the washing machine instead of being vacuumed with your robot vac.

What Will Your Robot Challenge Need?

There are several things that most robot vacuums need in order to function properly:

  • The area around the starting point. Most manuals on vacuuming robots recommend that the robot slowly exit three of the four corners of the vacuum to ensure it has room to return home.
  • Good Wi-Fi signal. If your robot vacuum is to connect to Wi-Fi, as many do these days for controlling and updating software, it requires a strong connection wherever it is installed. Most of them can connect to the 2.4 GHz wireless band, so make sure you have it (and select only that band during setup if your Wi-Fi shows the bands separately). Confusion? • Maintenance all the time. It may be a robot, but it can’t take care of itself. Check out my robot vacuum maintenance tips below, and be sure to read your vacuum’s manual to find out what your model needs.

How to Keep Your Robots Trouble-Free

Taking good care of your robot vacuum will help it last longer. Here’s how to remove debris that you should follow for any type of robot vacuum.

  • If it has only chargers: This means that waste is kept inside a vacuum. You will need to remove it after use. If your vacuum has a fill line that you can see, you can remove it when it reaches that line, but every use is best practice.
  • If it has an automatic setting: Each manufacturer will have a different recommendation for how long the auto parts should be removed, but it is usually between 30 and 60 days, depending on the design and usage. If you run your dryer every day and have a lot of debris, such as pet hair, you may need to search for 30 days or less.
  • If it has water tanks: Dirty water tanks should be cleaned after vacuuming. Clean water can be saturated at the site.

Be sure to review your robot vacuum’s manual to see any other steps the manufacturer recommends you perform regularly to keep the vacuum cleaner running as long as possible. Most models also have replacement parts, so you can swap out parts like brushes without needing a new vacuum.

The Best Robot Vacuums of 2026

I’ve been testing the latest models from our favorite cleaning products. Here are the top three I would buy right now.

Shark

PowerDetect UV Exposure

I was surprised that I really liked AI-powered Shark PowerDetect UV Exposure. Its UV light revealed spots on the floor where I knew I had spilled before, and its built-in AI made the mop go back and forth to clean those stains in a way I’ve never done before. The UV Reveal also did a great job on my hardwood floors (both LVP and tile) as a vacuum-and-vacuum combo, and on my builders’ carpet and rug in the living room. I was surprised to find that the rug felt so soft and squishy, as if I had broken something I loved. Dyson stick vacuum instead of just sending me a robot vacuum cleaner to do the job for me.
