Vincent Tan: Cardiff City owner converts £42m debt into equity

He turned down at least three takeover offers nearly a year after converting the owner’s debt to equity.

With Wales and Real Madrid great Gareth Bale refusing to rule out fresh bids for his hometown club, it remains to be seen how this loan move could affect Tan’s ownership in Cardiff.

The Bluebirds enjoyed a successful 2025–26 season, winning automatic promotion from League One and an immediate return to the Championship.

Tan was reluctant to sell Cardiff to the third tier as the club’s value would have dropped significantly.

And by recapturing some of that value on his return to the Championship, he could be eyeing a third Premier League promotion of his tenure.

With the championship playoffs expanding from four to six teams, there’s a big chance of making that jump next season.

Tan’s loan conversion will not have a direct impact on Cardiff’s transfer spending this summer nor will it affect the profit and stability calculations or squad cost rules.

But it is important in reducing Cardiff’s overall debt, improving the club’s quality and general financial health.
