Marmalade costumes are ready: London’s musical Paddington Bear opens on Broadway next spring. The phenomenally good show, that won seven awards for the Olivier award, will premiere on March 30 at the Al Hirschfeld theater in New York, home of Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Luke Sheppard, director of Paddington: The Musicalhe said the iconic ursine hero “approaches life with passion, kindness and unflinching imagination – and the way Broadway will be”.
It’s a long way from 32 Windsor Gardens, where a silly but lovable bear from Peru is adopted by the Brown family and (eventually) conquers the whole community. The show, based on Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and the 2014 film adaptation, opened in London late last year to many five-star reviews, including. in the Guardian. The production received nine WhatsOnStage Awards and he won Critics’ Circle Award for the best new music.
Paddington: The Musical features a book by Jessica Swale and music and lyrics by McFly’s Tom Fletcher. “The response from West End audiences of all ages has been unparalleled to anything I’ve ever experienced,” said Fletcher. “It is a great honor to welcome New Yorkers to the exciting world of Paddington.” Manufacturers Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley said: “As the home of many world-renowned musicians, there’s no better place to create new work than New York, and we can’t wait to share the world of Paddington with Broadway audiences.
Throwing of Broadway speed has not been announced. In London, the bear is played by two: James Hameed provides the voice and is a remote puppet, while Arti Shah acts in a fur coat. Together they won an Olivier award for best actor in a musical, while Tom Edden (as the busybody Mr Curry) and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt (as the shy Millicent Clyde) also won Oliviers for their performances.
Tickets for new York The run will start at $69 and is now on sale. Most of the London concerts in June and July are sold on the official website. It is playing at the Savoy theater until February 2028.
