Morocco’s Ayoub Bouadi’s remarkable performance against Brazil in his first World Cup match sparked widespread controversy in France, the country he represented at various age groups, including the Under-21s, before opting to play for Morocco.
Boya is 18 years old and plays for French club Lille. His decision to represent Morocco instead of France raised a wave of criticism in French sports circles.
According to the statements reported by the “RMC Sport” TV channel, the former player of the French national team, Jerome Rotten, expressed his displeasure with France’s loss of Boudi’s talent, criticizing the technical staff led by Didier Deschamps.
Roten said: “When I hear Deschamps’ statements, I feel shocked. We didn’t have to wait for his performance against Brazil to know that he is an exceptional player ahead of his age.”
“When you have a young player like him who has represented France at youth level, the coach and the federation have to communicate with him and make sure that his future with France is guaranteed.”
Rotten went further when he knowingly compared him to the current France national team midfielders, believing that he is “better than Chouamine and gives the team a different dimension than Rabiot and Manu Kone”.
Boya captained France’s under-21 side during the final international break before the World Cup, but opted to represent Morocco after being left out of Deschamps’ final squad.
The Lille man’s brilliant performance against Brazil has reignited debate in France about the management of dual-nationality talent, at a time when many believe the French federation has lost one of the most popular players of the new generation to the Atlas Lions.
