Video: From yellow to World Cup… Al Owais brings back memories of 2022 epic with historic save

The Saudi goalkeeper shone against Uruguay

Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais recalled his historic run at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a historic save in his first appearance at the 2026 World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico.

Al Owais started for Saudi Arabia in the match against Uruguay in the first round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami early on Tuesday.

Al Owais performed exceptionally well in the match, especially in the 30th minute, when he saved a Uruguayan header from the edge of the six-yard area and cleared it away with a very quick reaction.

The save brought back memories of Al Owais at the 2022 World Cup when he shone in Saudi Arabia’s three group matches despite being sent off early, most notably in the historic 2-1 win against Argentina.

Strangely, Al Owais made the World Cup by accident as he was left out of former France coach Herve Renard’s account, insisting he would not be in the starting line-up given his reliance on Al Nasr goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aqidi.

However, Al-Aqidi’s poor performance against Egypt last March led Renard to call on Al-Owais for help, even though he plays in Saudi Arabia’s First Division Yellow League, and rely on him against Serbia in the same month.

Current Saudi Arabia manager Giorgos Donis of Greece has endorsed Renard’s decision as he named Al Owais in the World Cup squad and relied on him as a starter for the first game against Uruguay.
