Spanish newspapers describe the first game of the World Cup as disastrous
Monday night’s goalless draw against Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup opener sent shockwaves across Spain.
Considered to be one of the favorites to win the tournament, Spain disappointed with their performance and inability to penetrate the Cape Verdean defense despite clearly controlling the game.
This unexpected setback drew sharp criticism in the Spanish press Against coach Luis de la Fuente’s battalion.
The Spanish media did not hesitate to criticize the team’s performance, with the newspaper Marca describing the incident as a “disaster” and that Spain “lacks football talent and resources”.
As for “AS” newspaper, it spoke about the “ship sinking” and described the team as “lacking spirit and strength”.
“Mundo Deportivo” newspaper described this first match as “disastrous” and believes that “the situation should be quickly corrected”.
Meanwhile, newspaper Sport confirmed that La Roja’s squad are “lacking composure” and must “radically raise their performance levels” if they hope to retain their place at the 2026 World Cup.
Spain is in Group H of the World Cup along with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
