California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and the main critic of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has said that he is being investigated by the US Department of Justice.
In a video on X Monday, Newsom said that the investigation was politically motivated and that he is being watched because he is considering the US presidential election in 2028. Newsom said that the Department of Justice is also investigating his wife.

The department has not confirmed Newsom’s investigation.
“Today, my wife and I joined Donald Trump’s list,” Newsom said in a post. “They’re not following me because of the mean tweets, but because I’m thinking about running for president.”
Newsom added that investigators have found no criminal charges and that the family has “nothing to hide”.
The governor said that the government agencies have been wanting to interview his friends and former colleagues, “not because they have found a crime, because they are looking for it”.
He said investigators are also looking into his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who runs a nonprofit that promotes women’s equality.
Newsom also called Trump “the most corrupt president in American history”. He accused the Justice Department, which is now headed by Trump, Todd Blanche, of “abusing the grand jury process” in trying to impeach him.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to blame his political enemies.
Since taking office in 2025, the Justice Department has impeached or intends to impeach New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey, who investigated the president.
The Justice Department also investigated US Senator Adam Schiff, who led the prosecution of Trump during his first term, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a key opponent who served as vice president in 2024.
Trump has regularly insulted Newsom on social media, often calling him “Newscum”.
The US president in June of last year said Newsom should be arrested for protesting immigration enforcement in California.
Newsom, who is term-limited As governor and leaving office in January 2027, he will take a similar approach online.
Most recently, she posted a photo of Trump appearing to be sleeping at a public event on Sunday, the president’s 80th birthday.
“80 is the new 100,” Newsom wrote.
