A hint from Liverpool?… Sudden turn in Nunes’ fortunes ahead of Saudi Arabia match?

The player submits an application to his new club

The future of Uruguay striker Darwin Nunes has been the subject of intense speculation in the past few hours as he prepares for his World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia.

The match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay will take place tomorrow at one o’clock in the morning (Mecca time) as part of the eighth group competition with Spain and Cape Verde.

Liverpool bought Nunes’ contract from Benfica four years ago on June 14 for €64 million, a day the Reds added to the speculation surrounding Nunes’ future as he posted a reminder of the deal on his official X page, sparking much controversy among the club’s fans.

“Liverpool” page wrote yesterday. “On this day Darwin Nunes joined Liverpool 4 years ago.

However, Nunez was only able to impress for a few moments at Anfield and his relationship with the fans deteriorated before his departure.

The 26-year-old scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool before joining Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for around £46m in August 2025, and has scored nine goals in 24 games for the club.

Karim Benzema joined Al Hilal last winter in Mercato, Nunez became redundant from Al Hilal, with whom he agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent last month, and then became a free agent, an opportunity that is tempting several European clubs to sign him.

Website Team Talk reported that Nunez is a target for his former club Benfica as he impresses new coach Marco Silva. He is also interested in Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, with Atletico Madrid the latest to add to his list of admirers.

With this new reality, Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero, citing his colleague Juan Pablo Romero, reports that Nunes’ return to Liverpool has become certain and will be announced as soon as his country is eliminated from the World Cup.

Charquero wrote in X. Attention, Darwin Nunes is returning to Liverpool. These days, the matter will not be confirmed by the request of the player who wants to concentrate with the Uruguay national team (in the World Cup).

Liverpool will need more attacking options next season under new manager Andoni Iraola, given Hugo Ekitiki’s Achilles tendon injury.
