Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s thriller in which he reveals that the US has been experimenting with UFOs for nearly 80 years, is on track to become his highest-grossing US title.
The film, which opened in 77 theaters, took in $44m (£32.7m) in its three-day weekend for a global cume of around $92.9m (£69.4m) and $7.6m (£5.6m) from the UK and Ireland.
Spielberg’s most recent film, 2023’s The Fabelmans, ended up with $45.6m worldwide, while 2021’s West Side Story took in $76m. Revelations Day, which stars Emily Blunt as a weather forecaster who can track down strange news, and Josh O’Connor as a whistleblower who is ready to tell the world about UFO atrocities, cost $115m to make and nearly $80m to sell.
Experts estimate that the film will need to take in around $300m to cover its costs – as cinema owners cut ticket prices. The most recent Spielberg film to achieve this goal was 2018’s Ready Player One, adapted from Ernest Cline’s novel, which took in $583.5m – nearly 10 times its US opening.
About half of that final figure came from China, which was less than happy with Opening Day, where the film made $2.95m and entered the charts at No 3. More than a quarter of its Chinese revenue came from Imax screenings.
In the US, nearly half of that revenue came from major viewing events. About 60% of ticket buyers were 35 or older, and 57% were male.
Emotions, Curry Barker’s sleeper hitwas No. 2 on the chart in the US, with four consecutive weekly numbers bigger than its opening – marking the best result ever for distributor Focus Features. So far, it has taken in $286m worldwide, surpassing Backrooms, another viral hit from a young YouTuber.
The film is still performing very strongly, taking in $262m worldwide. It found Marty Supreme to be the highest grossing film in A24 less than two days after its release.
At this time Michaelthe first installment of Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biography, broke records over the weekend, with its worldwide gross topping $932m, surpassing the $911m that Bohemian Rhapsody took to become the biggest-grossing single worldwide.
The film, which was also produced by Graham King, was criticized great opposition to destroy the worldwide box office. Next in line is the highest-grossing biopic title of all time, starring Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which made $975m in 2023.
