With growing interest in the signing of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, Atletico Madrid sporting director Matteo Alemany has received an invitation from a Barcelona official, which appears to be a social issue but has some definite implications.
Alemany has been invited to attend the wedding of one of Barcelona’s former chiefs, Joan Soler, in a move that observers say goes beyond a purely personal celebration and opens the door to informal talks between the two clubs.
According to the Spanish “Mundo Deportivo”, with the confirmation of reliable sources of “Barcelona”, Joan Soler will resume his duties as the head of the youth football sector and member of the sports committee from next July 1.
Among the notable invitees is Matteo Alemany, who previously served as Barcelona’s sporting director (2021-2023) and has a close friendship with Soler, and his presence comes at a very sensitive time as Alvarez is a prime target to strengthen the attack following the departure of Robert Lewandowski. Especially with the Anthony Gordon deal ruled out as the only solution.
There is an air of joy at the ceremony, but mystery surrounds a possible meeting between Almani, Laporta and Deco, at a time when talks between the two clubs are strained over the transfer of the 26-year-old Argentine, with Alvarez keen on a move to Barcelona and his contract with Atletico being extended by €530 million to 20 penalties.
For his part, Fabrizio Romano of Mercato in Europe revealed that Barcelona submitted a preliminary official offer of €100 million by email, and despite Atletico Madrid repeatedly rejecting the offer and describing it as a “lie”, Barcelona sources confirm its existence, which opens up the possibility of discussing the social event face-to-face.
Barcelona appear to be trying to use personal and social connections to facilitate the complicated transfer process, while Atlético are looking to get the highest possible financial compensation. Will wedding celebrations become a platform for reaching the summer “deal of the century”? The answer may come in the next few days.
