United States President Donald Trump has announced that a ceasefire deal with Iran has been reached and that free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will now begin.
The agreement, which was later confirmed by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister on Sunday, will end the conflict between Iran and the US.
Trump said the deal would allow free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely closed since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on December 28.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now over,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Thank you all! I hereby approve the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, at the same time, I approve the immediate withdrawal of the United States Navy. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
Trump’s announcement came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif announced an agreement on X, saying it was an end to war on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
“After extensive negotiations, we are happy to announce that the Peace Agreement between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran HAS BEEN REACHED. Both sides have announced an immediate and permanent end to hostilities on all sides, including in Lebanon,” wrote Sharif.
The official signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19, he added.
“We want to thank the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their commitment to finding a solution to this conflict. We also want to thank our brothers in mediation, the leadership of the State of Qatar, for helping to achieve this agreement,” said Sharif.
“I am also very grateful to the visionary leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye for their great contributions in this matter. With the agreement now in place, the mediators will lead several meetings this week.
Qatar welcomed the announcement and appreciated its cooperation with Pakistan in helping to implement the memorandum of understanding.
“The Government of Qatar welcomes the agreement that was given on the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran to solve the problems between them, including ensuring the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and I see that it is an important step in promoting stable peace and promoting economic growth in the region and around the world,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar wrote on X.
