Mef faced with the choice of erasing the most painful memories or living with them forever, à la Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you can be forgiven for wanting to erase them. On the first night of five shows in Los Angeles to promote his 2024 album Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ariana Grande Frustrated by the idea of erasing memories in emotional, sometimes zany moments, he highlights one of his most successful revelations: forgetting his most painful experiences is not a trade he wants to make.
Grande has faced many challenges and disappointments in society since her youth, including a death of his old friend Mac Miller and Manchester bombing which killed 22 fans at one of his concerts in 2017. He has touched on these devastating events in previous recordings, but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind shows when it all caught up to him. He has spoken of the astrological idea of his return to Saturn as making these difficulties impossible to resist; Grande is associated with a a long line of singers, from Gwen Stefani to SZAwho have made music after this extraordinary event of the universe, and the 23-song list of the visual spectacle has leaned heavily on the cut of the album. The show was especially important because Grande hasn’t been on the show since 2019, when she also starred two times in a row. The bad guy films and judged the Word.
But it wouldn’t be Grande if she didn’t inject a bit of her cheekiness into deep music. Fittingly, Grande kicked off her show at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena with a theatrical performance of Yes, And? (Following her breakup in 2023, Grande became a punching bag when she began dating The Wicked. friend Ethan Slater; have been with them ever since broken.) Surrounded by a troupe of dancers, mic in hand, Grande dropped several of the song’s unfussy vibes with shoulder shimmies and hand shakes. He soon let out the first of several whistles he would blow tonight – as if to remind the enemy where he he has an incomparable gift, the form of four octaves.
The first act of the show emphasized this untouchable feeling by introducing the horn pieces including Responsibilities, a song that examines a relationship that sees her “jumping” to please someone who also acts as a boudoir dancer. She sported blue ears – also spotted by fans throughout the arena – and a hearty whip during her attack on R&B classic The Boy is Mine which sees her not fighting another woman over a man, but instead showing love as her girls support her. Even the show’s most poignant moment, Grande standing alone at center stage with a digital recording booth and microphone, showed her raising her spine-tingling voice, repeating the lyrics from the title track of Sunshine for several minutes before singing the entire song: “I don’t care what people say.”
In the scenes shown on the screens between scenes, Grande walked through a haunted, flooded house, looking for some kind of connected memory machine. As the show progressed, Grande saw this not as a gift but as her curse, destroying the computer. Similar to this whip, the powerful sequence show had a central part with famous numbers of Grande, including the scintillating Safety Net (a song about being afraid of the unknown: falling in love) before entering the club, and back-to-back songs during the Last Time, Rain on Me and Break. But her rendition of Dangerous Woman, in which she strutted the microphone like a sinuous jazz diva, was the highlight of the night as Grande unleashed her pipes on a variety of vocal chords.
After going through Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, many of her favorites, and the constant hate I Made You Love Me from Petal’s upcoming album, Grande closed the show with a light float, showing that it’s possible to endure a lot and still find a way to finish with a great voice.
