Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix: Harry Benjamin’s driver rating as Lewis Hamilton wins for Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory for Ferrari on Sunday with victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion, 41, shared the podium with former Mercedes team-mate George Russell in second and reigning world champion Lando Norris, making it the first all-British top three since 1968.

Hamilton closed the gap on 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli at the top of the drivers’ championship to 41 points after the Italian’s late-race retirement.

Here are my ratings for how the drivers performed throughout the weekend in Barcelona.

Lewis Hamilton – 10/10

First 10 of the year. Normally I’d reserve it to top each session but despite feeling early in the weekend, he found a balance with the car. Only missed pole and worked cleverly with the team to respond and change strategy to win his first Ferrari Grand Prix. Even without the virtual safety car, Hamilton’s pace was ominous. Made history.

George Russell – 8/10

It looked like it could have been his weekend until the race. In the end, none of the Mercedes had the pace to contend with Ferrari but there was salt in the wound to be overcome by teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Lando Norris 9/10

Kept himself in contention all weekend and race but missed that extra something from McLaren. After applying some pressure, he was basically in his own race in the end.

Max Verstappen – 8/10

Not happy throughout the practice. Having surprised himself in qualifying and the race pace not matching the front runners, he had a very good final to secure some much needed points for Red Bull.

Oscar Piastre – 6/10

Another where Australians’ weekend fades. Normally, we’re used to seeing Piastri get stronger every session but almost the opposite happened for the McLaren driver this weekend.

Isak Hazor – 7/10

Very close to Red Bull teammate Verstappen in qualifying. But wheelspin off the start line left him with a comeback drive.

Pierre Gasly – 9/10

Alpine team-mate Franco Colapinto was out-qualified after struggling with the brakes and attempting to change the entire car. Benefited with good strategic calls and points under VSC.

Franco Colapinto – 8/10

A good weekend but still very up and down with Colapinto in Argentina. Out qualified Gasly but could not match him in the race. Still secure the points.

Liam Lawson – 9/10

Another great weekend for New Zealander Lawson, who almost lost due to VSC but reliability issues for others combined with fast cars, and he is back in the points.

Arvid Lindblad – 8/10

Should have been challenging for a place in the final part of qualifying but Racing Bulls team-mate Lawson had the edge on him this weekend. Another point was the speed of the bag to the finish bag.
