We will also see history being made if Curacao becoming the youngest country to ever play at the World Cup, as they begin their campaign against Germany.
Ecuador – considered one of the dark horses in the tournament – are also in danger, facing the Ivory Coast, while Sweden face Tunisia as they return after missing out on the last edition.
Away from football, the basketball heat touched New York, where the Knicks were named NBA champions, based on the World Cup form of the United States.
Sunday match between Netherlands and Japan is part of Al Jazeera top-five must-sees World Cup 2026 group stage.
Finalists in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the Netherlands started Group F with an exciting meeting with Japan, who can overcome major challenges, after defeating Germany and Spain in the group for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After reaching three finals, the Dutch – by their own admission – are pushing themselves to go to North America.
Although the Netherlands’ former golden team – the team that won the Euros in 1988 – has not been able to replicate their international success, Ronald Koeman’s current squad is full of talent and success. And for the first time, have an outside chance to lift the trophy.
“We put a lot of pressure on ourselves,” Koeman told reporters on Saturday. “We want to go far in this competition, we have a strong team and we know what we need to improve in order to have a real chance.
“But we have to take one game at a time. We have to focus on Japan first, which will be a tough game.”
Boasting the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay, Tijjani Reijnders and Cody Gakpo, the Dutch are the ones to watch in the opening round of the 48-team World Cup.

Japan, however, will look to spoil their party. Coach Hajime Moriyasu knows his team will face a battle to get past a tough group if Samurai Blue fulfills its dream of going to an unknown stage at the World Cup.
“We have to survive this stage no matter what, but at the same time I see that this is a very strong group,” said Moriyasu, who put Japan in the last 16 group in Qatar. “Top of the class talent can be found in the Netherlands team.
Japan have never won a game in the last round of the World Cup, losing each of their previous 16 matches, and Moriyasu’s team went to the finals without their strong captain Wataru Endo. But watch out for Ayase Ueda, Takefusa Kubo, Junya Ito and Daichi Kamada.
Opta’s Stats Supporters advanced computers they have given the Netherlands a 50.2 percent chance of winning their Group F match against Japan, who have a 24.5 percent chance of winning. There is a 25.2 percent chance of drawing.
Overall, the Dutch are the favorites to get out of the group, with a 49.46% chance. The other teams in the group are Tunisia and Sweden.
Curacao – a small Caribbean island with a population of just over 150,000 and an area of just 443 square kilometers (171 square miles) – will be the smallest country to ever host a FIFA World Cup.
After writing a legendary qualification, he arrives in North America as one of the first four and faces the huge task of playing the four-time German national champions.
But Curacao, which relies heavily —from their home country of the Netherlands for players, is not giving up right now.
“We are a small country compared to Germany, but we will make life difficult for them and be a difficult team to play against,” said coach Dick Advocaat.
“We can’t lose anything. The expectation is not that big outside of us as a team, because we think we can surprise people. Just being here is good for the players and the country, but we also have to show people what we are made of.”
Along with Curacao, Advocaat is also expected to achieve history – the 78-year-old will be the oldest coach in the history of the World Cup.

Germany have a 90.7% chance of winning their Group E match against Curacao, who have only a 3.6% chance of pulling off an upset. There is a 5.7 percent chance that the game will end in a tie.
Overall, Germany has a 65.32 percent chance of leading the group, which includes Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
This is an exciting game, and both teams have an equal chance of winning.
Ivory Coast has a 37.5% chance of winning, while Ecuador’s chance of winning stands at 35.2%. Photography has 27.3 percent.
Sweden is the favorite to win the game, having a 51.1% chance of winning. Tunisia’s consensus is at 23.2 percent – lower than the 25.7 percent chance of a draw.
The World Cup carnival kicked off in New York on Saturday, when Brazil and Morocco met in the tournament Heavyweight Group C struggle. But the heat of football was overshadowed by the excitement of basketball after the Knicks home broke the curse of 53 years to win the NBA Finals.
New York erupted in cheers after the Knicks’ 94-90 Game 5 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, with fans setting off fireworks and honking and honking around the city.
