Scary night
England’s stars were forced to take shelter at home after severe storm warnings were sounded at the team’s training center during the World Cup.
According to British newspaper The Sun, the Three Lions mission landed in Kansas City on Saturday morning and held its first training session at the Sweep Soccer Village complex, but on the evening of their first night in the region, everyone, including the English camp, received an emergency alert on their cellphones amid thunderstorms, lots of lightning, heavy rain and high winds on the Missouri border.
The urgent warning message said: “Critical, imminent threat alert. National Weather Service. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for the area until 9:00 PM CDT with winds up to 80 mph. Please take shelter in a strong building and stay away from windows. Flying debris can be more dangerous than debris inside a room. The basement of the building is also guarded. “A storm watch is in effect until 11:00 PM for northeast and east-central Kansas and west-central Missouri.”
The England delegation followed instructions and stayed indoors while they trained at the Sporting KC headquarters in Kansas City, seven miles northwest of their World Cup hotel, where the delegation is staying at The Inn at Meadowbrook, an English country-style resort south of the city.
The England team had arrived at their World Cup training center just hours before the incident in sunny, hot weather and clear skies. The team practiced at the Sweep Soccer Village complex in Missouri, about half an hour from downtown Kansas City, in front of about 300 local spectators. The only concern during training was whether Harry Kane and his teammates had applied enough sunscreen.
By eight o’clock that evening, the scene had completely changed, as is common in these areas, due to a severe storm that local residents described as one of the region’s worst in years, and sirens rang out in the city center warning those outside to take shelter.
It is noteworthy that the publication of this warning took place four days after England’s friendly match against Costa Rica was postponed for an hour due to a huge thunderstorm. The shocking incident culminated a frantic 24 hours for the mission, which also witnessed… Shoes and training equipment were stolen before recoveryAdditionally, the team’s chef was not allowed to board the train because he was carrying kitchen knives.
