Pulling hair and dealing with goalkeepers… new refereeing tweaks in the Premier League

The facts of last season played their part in the adjustments

The Premier League has announced that pulling an opponent’s hair “does not necessarily result in a straight red card” in changes to refereeing guidelines for next season.

The association said in a statement that a red card would be issued for “excessive force and/or violence” by the hair, while incidents deemed intentional but without excessive force would be punished with a yellow card.

The change comes after Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez, Everton defender Michael Keane and Sunderland’s Daniel Ballard were sent off for pulling their opponents’ hair last season, according to Reuters.

The clarification came as part of a wider set of principles that will determine how referees will apply the laws of the game next season.

The association said tackles would be scrutinized more closely, and referees would be encouraged to penalize non-football actions that have a tangible impact on opponents.

Referees will also pay more attention to protecting goalkeepers and penalize players who initiate contact without any real experience of playing the ball if it affects the goalkeeper’s ability to shoot it.
