Five Indian soldiers have died after the plane they were traveling in crashed in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, according to government officials.

“Accident management and initial inquiries are in place at this time,” the Air Force wrote, adding that an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
NDTV broadcasts pictures of the crash site, showing thick black smoke and the plane appearing to have broken up.
The Indian Army uses a fleet of about 105 An-32 aircraft to transport personnel and cargo.
The last major accident involving a turboprop engine occurred in 2019 in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, near the border with China, where 13 people were killed.
