HAre you, like me, suffering from chronic World Cup fever? Have you ever been staring at the score chart, trying to memorize the start times of all 104 games, even though – no, especially – Uzbekistan v DR Congo? Have you registered for the office sweepstake, which was played Bracketologylistened to about 831 preview podcasts (including Guardian’s Football Weeklyof course), and quietly let go of your moral skepticism Trump everything front door? I’m inside.
For people who are not interested in football, this must be the worst time, when every last scoreboard, newspaper front page (and website) and cola can be dedicated to the game. And that’s before you even turn on your TV, where the competition has destroyed the standard programming.
In that number, there is good news and bad news: the good news is that, due to the time difference, in the UK at least half of this year’s races will take place in a few hours; The bad news is that because of the size of this Biggest World Cup In any case, there are 40 more matches than there were in the last tournament, and the thing drags on for more than a week.
Fear not though – pop culture is here to save you. In the next five extra weeks there are a lot of movies and TV shows being released, enough to kill the game.
Here’s a guide to how to avoid the World Cup.
Video
The movie seems to be the perfect getaway for most of the Scotland/England/Cape Verde crowd (unless the local movie theater is showing the World Cup – be sure to Google it ahead of time), and it’s a great time for big, scary releases. Emotions and Back rooms it’s still looking, it’s Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster Disclosure Day reach (see Take Five below for more on that). There’s another big one next Friday, too: Play Story 5which is becoming more and more popular because of its substance abuse story.
Jackass: The Good and the Laston June 26, it is the last visit of Johnny Knoxville and friends: they hope to witness more testicles than even Vinnie Jones can serve. Also on the same day, as France played their final match, Jodie Foster made her French debut in a psychological mystery drama. A Secret Life. Seniors: Bring your suit from the dryer on time Minions & Monsters on 1 July. Olivia Wilde is very concerned about the error-com To call it arrives two days later, too Nirvanna: The Band – The Show – The Moviea funny, high-fantasy Canadian web series. On July 10, the World Cup comes to an end, you have two very different movies to choose from: Burning Evil and reconstructing life events Moana. And then, in its final moments, some truly blockbuster programs, such as the biggest film of the year: Christopher Nolan’s. The Odyssey (July 17). Up there, Infantino!
Television
The World Cup has booked most of its June and July slots, but there are still plenty of ways to watch it, starting next Wednesday with the final of the horror games on Apple TV. Widow’s Bay. The next day brings another twisted thriller by Harlan Coben, I will find youfor Netflix: the main reason for making this is that it stars Britt Lower, for anyone who is having trouble giving up Severance. The following week is a big one for returns: Dragon House the third season (HBO Max, every week from June 21) promises the biggest battle that ever happened in Westeros in its opening episode; when A bear (Disney +, all episodes 26 June) will return for its final season – and hopefully will have a character, after several recent trips.
Hopefully confusing all the “U! S! A!” A World Cup bust and a celebration of America’s 250th birthday Life, Larry and Pursuit About Unhappiness (HBO Max, 26 June), alongside Larry David looks at the country’s confusing history. After a summer-long dystopian disaster drama? The third part of twisted fun It is not (Apple TV, 3 July) has you covered. Ted Lasso may be wisely waiting to return until after the World Cup (although the man is appearing at the opening game in the US tonight), but Hannah Waddingham fans will not have to wait until then: she stars with Octavia Spencer in the comedy. Ride or Die (Main Video, all episodes 15 July). And, on the last weekend of the World Cup, another big finale (for his fans at least): Heartstopper Forever (Netflix, July 17), the final episode of the LGBTQ+ comedy.
Music
Festivals are a great way to escape football (well, except that every second person at the same time likes to wear retro-style gear these days): there are a few running in the World Cup across the UK, from. Isle of Wight and Creamfields in Cheshire to Glasgow’s The price of TRNSMT: see Guardian’s summer festival guide for a complete summary. There are, of course, tons of great outdoors this summer too: Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, System of a Down, Wolf Alice and Boxing and some of the big games being played in parks or stadiums while the World Cup is in progress.
Can’t make any of them? Well, we’ve been blessed with a great line-up of new albums over the next six weeks. Big hitters include The Strokes‘ The Truth Awaits (24 July); Madonna‘s Confessions on a Dancefloor: Part II (3 July); the 25th – twenty five?! – The album is The Rolling StonesForeign Languages (10 July); rising pop titan Gracie Abrams‘ Daughter From Hell; is a future funk wunderkind Steve Lacy‘Oh yeah? (both 17 July). Glad to hear about Graham Coxon Castle Park (19 June), recorded in 2011 but surprisingly preserved until now, the first album in 15 years from the rock band. Regions & Jobs called Set of All Sets (10 July) and Alone Together (10 July), new from the punk band. Show Me the Body – catch them alive, they are smart and a little dangerous.
