FIFA’s surprising decision affects Egypt’s jersey ahead of the World Cup

The Egyptian Football Association has received instructions from the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) requiring changes to be made to the Egyptian national team’s jersey ahead of its participation in the 2026 World Cup in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.

The changes included the removal of the seven stars above the national team logo, symbolizing the number of times the Pharaohs have won the Africa Cup of Nations title.

This is based on FIFA World Cup regulations, which stipulate that the stars on team shirts during the tournament must only reflect the number of World Cup titles won, without counting continental or regional championships.

FIFA has also requested that the color of the player numbers on the jerseys be changed from gold to white, with the aim of increasing the clarity of the numbers and making them easier to distinguish by referees, fans and TV broadcast media during matches.

Egyptian journalist Mahmoud Shawky revealed through his personal account on the platform.X:“The International Federation notified the Egyptian Football Association about this a few months ago, explaining that the decision was made within the framework of the usual procedures for the regulation of the tournament.

Shauki wrote: “FIFA notified the Football Association four months ago not to wear Africa Cup of Nations stars on team shirts during World Cup matches as standard procedure.”

He added: “FIFA has also requested that the color of the shirt numbers be changed from gold to white, and Puma is responsible for the design of the shirt colors. The white color has been adopted to make the numbers clearer.”

Egypt’s national team has unveiled its new jersey at the official photo session for the 2026 World Cup, after removing the seven stars from the top of the logo and replacing the gold color of the players’ numbers in accordance with changes mandated by FIFA.
