At least one person has been killed and nine hospitalized in a shooting in Texas, where authorities say the suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, also died after a standoff with police.
The shooting happened early Friday morning in Midland, where local witnesses told The Associated Press they heard what they estimated were about 40 people shot.

The city government said in a social media statement that the suspected killer had been pronounced dead after he had been locked in an abandoned hospital for several hours. The Texas Department of Public Safety said Villarreal was wanted by police and shot at officers during a pursuit several days ago.
“The shooting incident has been resolved, and the suspect has been pronounced dead,” the social media post said. “The incident is still active and has not been cleared. Road closures in the area are expected to remain in place while the investigation continues.”
Police have not released details on how Villarreal died, but Mayor Lori Blong said police used robots and drones to confirm her death.
Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four victims underwent surgery and five others were in stable condition.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, as well as their families,” Blong said at a press conference.
Villarreal, from the nearby city of Odessa, is wanted for attempted murder after he shot a Midland police officer who was fired Wednesday. The officer was not injured and returned fire.
Police responded to reports of a gunman Friday with dozens of vehicles and patrol cars.
