Has politics reached the National Academy of Science?

This article is one of those: Can we identify the causes of climate change in climate events? A few decades ago, that was not possible. But researchers have since manufactured goods which allows them to determine the probability that various events can occur without being affected by our greenhouse gases. And so it is known that some of the very dangerous events simply it would not have happened without the heat we have driven.

This clarity has allowed some researchers to link the economic damage from climate events to the impact of fossil fuels. produced by individual companies. If these studies are widely accepted as legitimate scientific works, judges will be forced to accept them as evidence in any lawsuits against said companies.

There have been many lawsuits filed against oil companies, but many they didn’t win because the judges have decided that they are interfering with policies that should be implemented at the federal level. But things like economic damage have long been considered the domain of the courts, and a direct connection between business practices and damage caused by storms can be a very difficult case to escape.

This is what the National Academies came back for, as a committee created during the Biden administration is in the process of examining the way scientists learn. Oil companies are concerned enough that, as a Politico article explains, they have hired third parties to provide access to the emails of committee members who work at public universities.

All of this suggests that the fight against this report will be great, and the credibility and funding of the National Academies may face constant harassment, which will forever damage science-based policies in the US. And this may provide another indication that, while the underlying principles may be political, trying to avoid becoming a target by saying “we’re just looking at science” may not be a good idea.
