Algeria have received a worrying warning just six days before the start of the 2026 World Cup after doubts grew over the fitness of defensive mainstay Rami Bensebaini to face defending champions Argentina.
The Algerian defender has raised doubts over next Wednesday’s match between his country and Argentina at the start of the World Cup in North America.
The negative indicators were confirmed after Ben Sabaini was absent from the training of “Desert Warriors”. Which took place yesterday, Thursday, at the sports center of the University of Kansas in the United States of America.
The Algerian Football Federation partially resolved the controversy via its official website today, Friday, confirming that the player underwent an individual treatment program outside the group, while the rest of the team-mates participated in training as normal.
Absence is not new. Bensebaini did not feature in the last two friendlies against Holland and Bolivia, which ended with the Greens winning 1-0 and 4-0 respectively. At the end of the last season, he also stayed away from the competition with Borussia Dortmund due to injury.
The medical staff of the national team is extremely cautious about the defender’s condition, especially since the first confrontation will be against an Argentine attack led by Lionel Messi, and there is no room to risk a setback that could keep him out for longer.
Algeria begin their World Cup campaign by taking on Argentina in Kansas City on June 17 before taking on Jordan six days later before finishing the group stage against Austria on June 28.
