Clashes broke out between students and groups of protesters known as “black blocs” against police forces in the Mexican capital outside Mexico City’s stadium to coincide with the opening of the World Cup.
An opening ceremony was held on Thursday evening World Cup 2026It is jointly organized by Mexico, the United States of America and Canada.
“AS” newspaper reported that the area around the Mexico City stadium witnessed a series of unfortunate events that were not seen on the TV broadcasts of the Mexico-AAU match.
While the fans were celebrating inside the stadium, clashes and demonstrations took place in the nearby streets.
One picture showed a man on fire during clashes between protesters and police outside the stadium.
The clashes also saw fires, stone-throwing and fistfights between protesters and police forces in Mexico City.

Participating groups included school students, missing relatives, teachers, feminist activists and pensioners.
People also tried to remove barriers that separate the light rail route from Calzada de Tlalpan, which is just a few kilometers from Mexico City’s stadium.
Relatives of the missing have written slogans pointing to the more than 130,000 missing since 2006, the year the federal government’s war on organized crime began.
Protesters also removed some barricades and used them to confront police forces around the stadium.

According to the Secretariat of Civil Security in Mexico City, about 7,500 security personnel participated in the operation, the purpose of which was to secure the opening ceremony of the stadium.
Security officials said about 200 masked people took part in the riots outside the stadium, out of an official estimate of about 800 protesters present in the area.
The issues championed by the protest groups are varied, including accusing the government of negligence in searching for the missing, demanding pension reform, the repeal of some teacher retirement laws, protesting human rights abuses, and higher wages for education union workers, among other demands.
