BMW’s Neue Klasse M concept brings the next level of EV technology to motorsports

Just in time for Le Mans, BMW is taking the wraps off its new M concept built on the Bavarian automaker’s next-generation Neue Klasse architecture.

The idea is the beginning of the new language of BMW’s M divisionshowing a change for the better future. The company says it was built on the guiding principle “Born for racing. Made for the streets,” connecting BMW’s motorsports heritage with next-generation EV technology.

Marketing bromides aside, the new concept is a two-door sedan with powerful parts, precise lines, big wheels, and strong shoulder section. It’s an introduction to BMW’s new M eDrive system, which supports Neue Klasse Gen6 technology optimized especially for high-performance EVs.

The concept has four electric motors controlled by BMW’s Heart of Joy central computer, which allows direct control of the drivetrain and braking. It also improves energy recovery, optimal traction, and “direct response,” says BMW. With an 800-volt design paired with a 100kWh battery, it uses the automaker’s sixth-generation cells for maximum power and fast charging. The battery housing is strategically integrated in the front and rear axles to improve handling and improve stability.

The rear end of the concept features BMW’s signature kidney grille combined with headlights for a shark-like appearance. This is the reintroduction of BMW’s M Yellow Lights, inspired by GT racing and the automaker’s M Hybrid V8, and the three-dimensional Track Lights, both of which will be signatures of future M cars.

A neat V-shaped vent on the hood allows for cooling of the EV drivetrain. The front apron features a trimaran-style bumper, inspired by speedboats. A rear ducktail spoiler, along with a floating spoiler, helps reduce downforce, which should help with stability when tearing around the trails.

The interior features four new seats made from composite natural fibers. There is black leather on the steering wheel, door panels, and roll bar. The floating dashboard is wrapped in black woven material with M-specific hexagonal backlighting. And bright red highlights are placed on the M gear selector, steering wheel controls, and digital display.

To be honest, it’s just an idea, but it seems much closer to reality than it is amazing VDX car was introduced last year. Based on the similarity recently updated i3could preview the production-ready Neue Klasse M3 down the line. We know that the M3 ZA0, with a quad motor and 1,000 horsepower, will go into production next spring.
