Gerrard surprises Cristiano Ronaldo with a historic confession

The Englishman Steven Gerrard, the legend of “Liverpool” and the England national team, revealed the best football player he met during the participation in the World Cup, recalling the memories of the meeting with Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.

England lost on penalties to Brazil Europa (1-3), a goalless draw after full time and extra time, a match that saw the brilliance of legend Cristiano Ronaldo and the dismissal of former Manchester United teammate and then Three Lions star Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard said during a video interview with the English radio station Talk Sport. “I have to pick Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final match.”

He added: “Owen Hargreaves and I faced a big challenge trying to neutralize his threat. In the first and overtime I saw a different level of play. He was exceptional.”

“I was surrounded by a lot of Liverpool and England internationals and I played against a lot of them, but there were only a few who played at a different level than everyone else and Ronaldo is definitely one of them.”

He continued. “The speed, the movement and the spaces he occupied on the pitch, in addition to his constant insistence on scoring, are all things that made him an exceptional player.”

Gerrard concluded his remarks by saying: “He beat me and Owen Hargreaves that day. He’s an amazing player, no doubt.”
