England midfielder Jude Bellingham has stressed the importance of finding a “feeling of love” to help them enjoy World Cup success this summer.
The tournament in North America took place on Thursday – Mexico – hosts USA and Canada – beat South Africa 2-0.
England’s campaign does not start until next Wednesday when they take on Croatia in Arlington, Texas.
Bellingham was part of the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2024, losing to Spain.
However, the national team – then managed by Gareth Southgate – was often accused of underperforming in that tournament. Bellingham said earlier. He felt like a little goat. England did not win that tournament.
Bellingham admitted that he felt the team “never came together” during the Euros, but insisted there is a different feeling around the camp now.
“At the Euros, we got some things wrong off the pitch,” he said in England’s Lions Den.
“I don’t feel the team is as connected as it could be for a number of reasons. Expectation was part of that – we did well in 2018 and we did well in Qatar (for the 2022 World Cup) and coming into that tournament we were seen as one of the two or three teams that should win the tournament.”
“Especially because we weren’t playing well, even when we won you couldn’t feel happy.
“There has to be that relentlessness and wanting to win, but the winning football character gets out of the system very quickly and we have to take that moment a little bit.”
“I think that at this time I had those experiences … and for example the person who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final is not always where you play at home, so you always have to be ready, everyone has to feel loved and a big part of the team. The other thing is just to enjoy it.”
