The jury was elected on Monday on the first day of the trial Musk v. Altman courthouse in Oakland, California. Some of the jurors who were selected expressed concerns about Musk himself, and the AI technology at the heart of the case, but convinced the court to set it aside until the case goes to trial. The outbreak also led to several riots outside the courthouse.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman were seen standing in line inside the courthouse this morning, but Elon Musk it was nowhere. Several reporters crowded into the packed room to listen to the proceedings.
Today’s goal was to select nine judges who would be fair and impartial in this case – a very difficult task considering that the main characters are some of the best professionals in the world. Many potential jurors said they had a negative view of Musk when questioned by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers and attorneys. But that did not stop them; only one judge was exonerated based on their negative opinions about Musk.
“The reality is that a lot of people don’t like him,” Gonzalez Rogers told the court. He added that he believes that Americans who have a negative opinion of Musk can remain loyal to the judiciary and judge the case fairly. The court will help determine the facts about whether Sam Altman and other defendants misdirected the nonprofit OpenAI project remotely. its original purposewhich may violate the law at this time. But their decision will be advisory – Gonzalez Rogers will have the final call.
The nine selected judges represented a diverse group, including an artist, a former Lockheed Martin employee, and a psychiatrist. Some of them said that they had misconceptions about artificial intelligence technology. In the end, both candidates assured the court that their outside opinions about Musk and AI should not interfere with their ability to determine the facts of the case.
OpenAI’s attorney William Savitt said at a press conference afterward that he was satisfied with the jury’s verdict.
“Mr. Altman, Mr. Brockman, and OpenAI are waiting to present their case to the court. They are confident in their position and they are waiting for the truth to be known,” Savitt told reporters. “The problem that we think we need to solve is just to present the truth here. We have a story about what happened that is consistent with what happened, it is consistent with what was written, and we want the jury to see that.
Musk is already trying to win his case in civil court. On Monday morning, the billionaire took to his X page to increase A recent New Yorker investigation into Altman’s fraudulent business practices. The story is weeks old, and the fact that Musk promoted the first day of the trial is no coincidence. Earlier this morning, the official OpenAI account posted a post on X says Musk’s case is “trying to undermine our mission to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all people.” Meanwhile, demonstrations were outside the court to protest the AI competition altogether and call for a pause in development.
On Tuesday, lawyers for OpenAI and Elon Musk will give opening statements, and the first witness in the case will be called.
