Will the Desert Warriors face off without one of Tango’s pillars?
As the first whistle approaches for the reigning World Cup 2026 champions, Lionel Scalloni is once again dealing with a problem that has dogged him for months – muscle injuries. This time the blow came in a sensitive position and in the name of an experienced player who was about to play his third World Cup.
This was confirmed by the Argentinian Olé newspaper Left defender Nicholas Tagliafico suffered a left leg muscle injuryWhile the player was undergoing a medical examination, he did not participate in group training.
He is now in doubt for the opening match against Algeria on Tuesday 16 June as the injury has been described as “moderate” and leaves Scaloni in a real dilemma as he does not have another straight left-back in the final 26-man squad.
The coaching staff were closely monitoring the fitness of a number of mainstays, led by Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinez and Cristian Romero, before Tagliafico joined them on this list.
According to TyC Sports, the player is not in danger of missing the entire tournament, but his availability for the first match is not guaranteed.
In light of this potential absence, Scalloni tested more than one solution. Lens’ French centre-back Facundo Medina is the strongest option to replace him in the starting line-up, especially after Nicolas Capaldo’s withdrawal from the official list, so Icelandic goalscorer and midfielder Valentin Barko remains another tactical option.
Argentina begin their title defense journey with three group matches – Algeria (June 16), then Austria (June 22) and finally Jordan (June 27), all matches in which Scaloni needs a 100% fit left-back.
