One of the ways Formula 1 has changed in the 21st century is its establishment driver-in-the-loop simulators. It all started in the early 2000s, maybe at McLaren, maybe at Toyota or Ferrari; F1 teams are secretly known for their quality. Over the years, they have become more and more popular, but they also have some very expensive sims like multi-axis machines that cost thousands of dollars. What makes the multi-million dollar tests used in F1 the most expensive, and the best in the industry?
For one reason, latency.
“There is this intimate relationship between the inputs that (the driver) gives to the car, how the car responds, and then the driver immediately feels that I am doing something. So this is a very closed loop between the driver and the car,” explained Ash Warne, founder and CTO of Dynisma Motion Generators, a simulator company based in the UK that provides a lot of money, Ferrari and Dirari recently. $10 million.
