Kane enjoyed the biggest season of his club career. He scored 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich.
That’s a ridiculous resume for any striker, never mind taking on the responsibility of contributing to a side’s build-up games as he barely played for Bayern last season.
England fans will want to see this goal-happy version of Kane at the World Cup. But it is worth noting that he achieved his remarkable total game in an increasingly free role, at times encouraging him to drop as deep as a full-back.
And so Tuchel decided it made the most sense to build the squad around this version of Kane.
Bayern lacked a natural link between their defense and attack for much of the season due to an injury to midfielder Jamal Musiala.
Cain was asked to solve this problem.
“When Jamal’s playing, it’s a little bit different. Taking the ball from defenders, driving … when we played together, it was good for him to go and do that,” Kane said.
“This season, it’s allowed me to play a bit deeper, use my qualities in that sense and play it forward, then get to the box later.”
Kane filled the role brilliantly, possessing a remarkable passing quality from deep – helping to find runners ahead of him in dangerous attacking positions.
